The German American artist Josef Albers introduced the concept of ‘Homage to the Square’ in the 1950s, and over several decades made hundreds of color field paintings within this specific framework. The young artists in this current exhibition at Columbia’s C33 Gallery all engaged with Albers’ theories of color and square systems and then endeavored to fit their personal visions, observations and dreams into a square painting format, at this current moment.

Some of these paintings are indeed square, abstract and modular, while others break out of the box. All the works are well executed and invite contemplation and reflection in the viewer. The artists collaboratively also made two large vinyl wall / window pieces that resonate with Josef Albers by using carefully calibrated colors that they feel are of the year 2025.
